For those of you about to shop

Some things to consider when buying truly vintage clothing include sizing, condition, cleaning requirements, stains, and correct storage. Many old garments were custom made and won't include sizing labels, or if they do, the old systems of sizing often differ from modern ones, buyer beware.

Always check quality of fabric, seams for stitch count, buttons that need replacing, hems down, and any needed alterations. When it comes to cleaning, a good vintage trader will be able to advise you well. If there are any stains make sure to verify the likelihood of it being removed. There are no guarantees, ever.

And storage may be the most important question to have answered before you leave with you new, old 1920s beaded ball gown. The weight of the beads will weaken or tear the delicate silk if hung.
